Javier Castle
Description
Few fortresses can boast of having given their name to a saint. Javier Castle, perched on a hillock in the small Navarrese village of the same name, was the birthplace of Saint Francis Xavier, son of the local lords. He was born here and spent his early years here, and it was from these walls that he took the name by which he would later be known as a missionary.
The building's story begins long before the saint's: its origins date back to the 10th century, making it a witness to more than a thousand years of life in this land. Its elevated position on the hillock already hints at its defensive purpose and means you can see it from afar as you approach, a silhouette that still dominates the surrounding landscape.
Over time, the memory of its illustrious resident has turned the castle into a place of pilgrimage. The busiest time comes in early March, with the famous Javieradas, when large numbers of pilgrims make their way here. Those who prefer a quiet visit would do well to avoid these dates; those who want to experience the place at its most popular and devotional, on the other hand, will find them the perfect opportunity.
Its value has not gone unnoticed by the authorities. As early as 1949 it was protected by decree as part of the cultural heritage, and in 1994 it was listed as a Site of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural) of Spain's historical heritage, a recognition that confirms what any visitor senses on arrival: that this is an essential piece for understanding the history and spirituality of Navarre.
