Clavijo Castle
Description
Few fortresses in La Rioja carry quite as much legend as this one. The surroundings of Clavijo Castle are said to be the site of the famous Battle of Clavijo, the one in which, as tradition has it, the Apostle St James appeared. Whatever the balance of history and storytelling in that episode, the fact is that its name has become forever bound to this corner of La Rioja, and that alone is enough to give a visit a special appeal.
The first thing that strikes you is its setting. The castle doesn't stand on just any hill; instead, it sits on the escarpment of the rock formation that borders the village of Clavijo. The fortification seems to spring from the rock itself, and from below you immediately understand why someone chose this spot to watch over and defend the territory: nature had already done much of the work.
This is a medieval fortification whose origins date back to the 11th century, a time when these lands saw borders constantly shifting back and forth. It's worth approaching it with that in mind, picturing its role as a stronghold on the heights rather than expecting a stately palace.
The climb up from the village lets you appreciate how castle and houses sit side by side, clinging to the same rocky mass and forming a very distinctive scene. It's a place to explore at a leisurely pace, letting the landscape work its magic and reflecting on that meeting of memory and legend that has made Clavijo a name known far beyond La Rioja.
