Sanctuary of the Cristo de la Victoria
Description
Anyone arriving in Serradilla, in the province of Cáceres, soon discovers that much of village life revolves around one name: the Cristo de la Victoria. This carved figure, one of the most revered by Catholics throughout Extremadura, is the very reason for the sanctuary that bears its name and the reason many visitors make their way to this corner of Cáceres.
The sanctuary is not only a place of devotion but also an enclosed convent, home to Augustinian Recollect nuns. This dual role gives it a special character: it is at once a place of worship open to those who come to contemplate the image and the home of a religious community that lives secluded behind its walls. It is worth bearing this in mind when visiting and respecting the silence and contemplative atmosphere befitting such a place.
The importance of the complex goes beyond the religious. In 1981 the building was declared a Site of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural), a recognition that places it among the most notable features of the region's historical heritage and underlines its value to Extremadura's collective memory.
A visit to the Sanctuary of the Cristo de la Victoria is, therefore, a good way to understand how popular faith has shaped the identity of many villages in Extremadura. Whether you travel out of devotion or out of artistic and historical interest, it is well worth an unhurried stop, and a chance to wander leisurely through the streets of Serradilla.
