Church of Santa María (Aínsa)
Description
Anyone who makes the climb up to Aínsa will find in the collegiate church of Santa María one of those churches that command attention without any need for ornament. Its Romanesque architecture speaks a language of bold volumes and bare walls, and it is precisely in this restraint that much of its appeal lies: this is a church best appreciated at a leisurely pace, letting the stone and the proportions do their work.
The church, also known as the Church of the Assumption, stands out for its great size and its sobriety, two features that have made it one of the most notable examples of Aragonese Romanesque in the Sobrarbe district. For travellers interested in the style, a visit is all but essential, as it shows how the Romanesque of this part of Huesca managed to combine monumentality with austerity.
Its two names, the collegiate church of Santa María and the Church of the Assumption, are a reminder of the importance the building once held in Aínsa's religious life. This is no mere village parish church, but a building conceived with ambition, whose scale surprises anyone arriving in the town for the first time.
The value of the ensemble is officially recognised by its designation as a Site of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural), a distinction that underlines its significance within Aragon's heritage. It is well worth spending time here, both outside, to appreciate the sheer solidity of its volumes, and inside, where the simplicity of the Romanesque can be felt in all its power.
A stop in Aínsa without stepping inside Santa María would be incomplete: it is, to a large extent, the best way to understand the character of this corner of Huesca and the mark the Romanesque left on Sobrarbe.
