Church of the Assumption (Olleta)

Description

Anyone heading to Olleta, a small village council within the municipality of Leoz in Navarre's Valdorba, will find in its parish Church of the Assumption one of those Romanesque churches well worth the detour. Built in the mid-12th century, it retains a highly distinctive silhouette: a bell tower rising above the west end of the church and, at the opposite end, a polygonal crossing tower that heralds the chancel.

The interior follows a simple yet well-proportioned plan. A single nave, divided into four bays, draws the eye towards a semicircular apse of remarkable depth. Just before it, the bay that precedes it is roofed by the crossing tower, resting on pendentives, a solution that brings height and light to the most sacred part of the building and is unusual in rural churches of this size.

What makes this church particularly interesting is its kinship with other buildings. In type it belongs to the same family as the Hermitage of the Cristo de Cataláin and the Monastery of San Jorge de Azuelo, and all three follow a model whose origins lie in the church of Loarre Castle, built in the early 12th century. To contemplate Olleta, then, is to recognise the echo of an architectural formula that travelled from that fortress to the valleys of Navarre.

For travellers with a passion for the Romanesque, the visit comes into its own when planned as part of a route linking these sister churches. Comparing their naves, chancels and crossing towers shows how a single scheme was adapted to different places and communities, and the Valdorba offers the ideal peaceful setting in which to do so at leisure.
