Church of San Martiño de Tiobre
Description
Anyone visiting Betanzos with an interest in medieval art has an almost unmissable appointment on the outskirts of town, in Tiobre. Here stands the church of San Martiño, regarded as one of the best-preserved examples of a rural Romanesque church in the whole province of A Coruña. It is neither a large monument nor one of international renown, and that is precisely where much of its appeal lies: it is a genuine testament to the religious architecture that dotted the Galician countryside in the heart of the Middle Ages.
Its construction dates from between the late 12th and early 13th centuries, a period when Romanesque was at its height and beginning to give way to new forms. A visit offers a glimpse of that moment of transition through a building that has come down to us in a condition rarely seen in churches of such age and modest character.
The setting adds particular interest to the visit. The church stands in the place known as Betanzos-O-Vello, a name that in itself sparks curiosity, as it refers to an 'old Betanzos' and hints at a deep connection between this spot and the history of the nearby town.
San Martiño de Tiobre is still the local parish church today, so rather than a museum piece, it is a living place of worship that retains its original purpose after more than eight centuries. For travellers exploring the municipality of Betanzos, it is well worth setting aside some time to visit and take in, at a leisurely pace, one of the finest examples of rural Romanesque in the A Coruña area.
