Church of Our Lady of Placeres

Description

Anyone visiting the village of Placeres, in the Pontevedra parish of Lourizán, will come across a church that owes much of its appeal to its setting: it stands at the end of the bar of the port. This location, bound up with the passing of boats and the life of the harbour, explains why this spot has long been a focal point for local devotion.

The building you can visit today is the Church of Our Lady of Placeres, known in Galician as the igrexa da Nosa Señora dos Praceres. It dates from the late 19th century and is built in the Neo-Gothic style, the movement that at the time was reviving the language of medieval cathedrals and which left numerous examples in newly built churches all over Spain. It is well worth taking your time here to appreciate how that historicist taste was translated to a church on a parish scale.

It is not, however, the first place of worship to be built on this spot. The present church was erected on the site of an earlier chapel, meaning that the Marian devotion to Our Lady of Placeres was already established here before the 19th-century building work was undertaken. This is worth bearing in mind during your visit: what you see is the renewal of a sacred space with older roots, adapted to the taste of its time.

All in all, it makes for an evocative stop for anyone exploring the municipality of Pontevedra beyond its old town and keen to discover the relationship between faith, architecture and the port that shapes the character of this area.
