Turégano Castle
Description
You only need to approach Turégano to understand why its castle is the image that best represents this town in the province of Segovia. The fortress rises on a promontory overlooking the houses below, so its silhouette accompanies travellers from the moment they arrive and becomes the inevitable point of reference on any stroll through the streets.
Its origins date back to the 12th century, placing it among the medieval landmarks that dot the province of Segovia. Choosing high ground on which to build a fortress was no whim: from that elevated position, the town spreading out at its feet could be kept under control, and that relationship between castle and town remains the most striking feature of the whole ensemble today. Above, the stone; below, the everyday life of Turégano, brought together in the gaze of anyone who climbs or looks up at the hill.
Beyond its historical value, the castle is a true emblem for local people, the symbol with which the town identifies itself. This is hardly unusual in Castilian towns that grew up in the shadow of a fortress, but in Turégano that sense of identity is especially evident in the way the building presides over the townscape.
Its importance was officially recognised almost a century ago: it was declared a National Monument in 1931 and is protected as a Site of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural). Two distinctions that confirm what visitors sense as soon as they set eyes on it: this is an essential part of Segovia's heritage.
A visit to Turégano, then, has a clear starting point. Take your time exploring the town and look up often, because the castle appears and disappears among the rooftops until, as you approach the promontory, it reveals itself in all its presence as the star of the place.
