Jarandilla de la Vera Castle
Description
Few buildings carry quite so many names as this fortress in the province of Cáceres. To some it is simply Jarandilla Castle; to others, the castle-palace of the Counts of Oropesa; and many know it as the Castle of Charles V. Each of these names is a clue, inviting visitors to look closely at the building and wonder about the different lives it has led over the centuries.
Its origins date back to the 13th century, placing it among the medieval defensive structures of the province of Cáceres. That military heritage sits alongside the idea of a noble residence suggested by the word palace, a dual character typical of many Spanish castles that went from guarding the surrounding land to serving as homes for the nobility.
The connection with the Counts of Oropesa points precisely to that noble lineage, while the name of Emperor Charles V adds a special appeal for anyone arriving with an interest in history. It is well worth taking your time, with no rush to get round it, and letting the building itself tell its story.
The fortress stands within the municipality of Jarandilla de la Vera, in the province of Cáceres, in Extremadura. A visit is a good excuse to explore the village that gives it its name as well, rounding off a day in which medieval heritage takes centre stage.
