Sanctuary of Our Lady of Estíbaliz
Description
Very close to the Álava capital, in the small village of Argandoña, stands one of those places that everyone in Álava knows by name: the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Estíbaliz. Its fame is no accident. This is a renowned sanctuary that holds a special place in the province's memory, and an all but essential visit for anyone wishing to understand the heritage surrounding Vitoria beyond the city itself.
Argandoña belongs to the municipality of Vitoria, so getting to Estíbaliz is easy for travellers staying in the city. It makes for a short excursion that lets you swap the bustle of the streets for the quieter atmosphere of a place of Marian devotion, dedicated to the Virgin who gives it its name and who remains an important figure for many people in Álava.
The value of the site was officially recognised almost a century ago. By decree of 3 June 1931, the sanctuary was declared a historic-artistic monument and included in the National Artistic Treasure, a distinction reserved at the time for the buildings considered most important in the country. Today it enjoys the highest level of heritage protection as a site of cultural interest (bien de interés cultural), which gives an idea of the importance attached to it within Álava's historical legacy.
It's worth visiting Estíbaliz unhurriedly, allowing time to explore it at a relaxed pace and take in the details. Whether drawn by devotion or by an interest in art and history, visitors will find a place with a long record of recognition, which naturally rounds off any stay in Vitoria and its surroundings.
