Monastery of Santa María de Sandoval

Description

In Villaverde de Sandoval, within the municipality of Mansilla Mayor in the province of León, stand the remains of one of those places that invite you to slow your pace: the Monastery of Santa María de Sandoval. Founded in the 12th century by the Cistercian order, the complex is today partly in ruins, and it is precisely this blend of noble stone and abandonment that gives it such a special character for those who make their way here.

The highlight for visitors is the church, which is still standing and continues to serve as the parish church, although services are now held only on rare occasions. It is worth noticing how its building history can be read in the walls themselves: the chevet and the first bay, with their vaults, aisles, piers and capitals, belong to the sober, refined Cistercian Romanesque style, while the rest of the church was completed in the late Gothic period. Walking through it is, in a sense, like witnessing the shift from one style to another under a single roof.

Its value was recognised early on: on 3 June 1931 the complex was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument, one of the oldest forms of protection in Spain's heritage.

Sandoval is also linked to Europe's great pilgrimage route. When UNESCO approved the extension of the Way of St James in Spain in 2015 under the name "Routes of Santiago de Compostela: Camino Francés and Routes of Northern Spain", the documentation submitted by Spain included an inventory of associated elements that lists this monastery. For pilgrims and travellers exploring this part of León, it is well worth a short detour to discover this corner where the Cistercians left their mark.
