Church of the Divino Salvador (Vejer de la Frontera)

Description

To reach the Church of the Divino Salvador you have to climb to the highest point of Vejer de la Frontera, making your way into the old walled precinct, a designated historic-artistic site that deserves to be explored at a leisurely pace. Up there, among streets that still follow the layout of centuries past, stands the church that for generations has been at the heart of the town's religious life.

The first thing that strikes you when you look at it is that this is not a single building, but two structures from different periods standing side by side, joined to one another. You don't need to be an expert to notice: a single glance is enough to spot where the two parts meet. This curious coexistence has a simple and highly revealing explanation. The newer project was intended to replace the old one, but it was never completed, so the original building survived precisely because the new one was left half-finished.

The history of the site goes back even further. Everything suggests that the oldest part is a Mudéjar building raised on the floor plan of an earlier mosque, and that this same plan was later taken over by the second building as well. Thus, on a single plot, the Islamic memory of Vejer, the Mudéjar art that inherited its forms and the building ambitions of later times are layered one on top of another.

Even the church's name holds a historical memory. It was dedicated to the Divino Salvador (the Divine Saviour) because it was on the sixth of August, the feast of the Transfiguration of the Saviour, that the Christians conquered the town. Visiting it, then, means glimpsing several chapters of Vejer's history read directly in the stone, something best appreciated if you walk slowly around the building before going inside.
