Church of San Pablo

Description

Few façades sum up Valladolid's past as well as that of the convent church of San Pablo, one of the city's most emblematic buildings and an all but essential stop for anyone exploring it. A visit also comes with a historical draw that is hard to match: two kings of Spain, Philip II and Philip IV, were baptised within its walls.

The church belongs to the Dominican order, and its construction stretched over more than a century and a half, from 1445 to 1616. That lengthy process explains why the building bears witness to several eras and still carries the imprint of the different generations determined to complete it. Centuries after those royal baptisms, Napoleon also passed through, adding yet another chapter to a history bound up with some of the most prominent figures of their day.

Part of San Pablo's charm lies in its setting. The church stands on the square of the same name, a space it shares with the Royal Palace and the Pimentel Palace, an ensemble known in centuries past as the royal sites. A stroll around the square lets you picture the bustle of the court and understand why this corner was for so long the seat of power in the city.

It is worth setting aside time for the surrounding area. The church adjoins the College of San Gregorio and lies very close to the other buildings of the National Museum of Sculpture, so the visit fits naturally into a wider tour of Valladolid's heritage. Together, church, palaces and museum make up one of the most rewarding areas in which to discover Valladolid at a leisurely pace.
