Montagut Castle
Description
Some places are better explained by their setting than by any document, and Montagut Castle is one of them. It stands on the hill that gives it its name, 597 metres above sea level, on a high point that in itself invites you to imagine why someone decided to build a fortress here almost a thousand years ago.
Its origins date back to the 11th century, a time when defensive structures shaped the landscape and organised life in the territories around them. Approaching its walls is therefore a chance to glimpse medieval Catalonia from one of its less-visited corners, far from the main tourist trails.
The castle belongs to the municipality of Montagut i Oix, in the Garrotxa district, within the province of Girona. This is a territory best explored at a leisurely pace, one that rewards those who linger in its villages and on its heights, and this hill is a good excuse to do just that.
It's worth planning your visit as part of a route around the area, combining the historical interest of the site with the pleasure of climbing a hill that commands views over the surrounding countryside. Anyone looking for heritage at an unhurried pace, without the crowds and with the feeling of discovering something of their own, will find in Montagut a simple destination steeped in centuries of history.
