Belmonte Castle
Description
Anyone approaching Belmonte, in the south-west of the province of Cuenca, will soon find their gaze drawn to its castle. The fortress stands on the hill of San Cristóbal, on the outskirts of the town, and it is precisely this elevated position that makes it the unmistakable landmark of the landscape and the main reason for making a detour here.
The relationship between the town and its castle is well worth noting. The fortress does not sit in the heart of the old town but slightly apart, overlooking the houses from the top of the hill. It is best to stroll around Belmonte first and then head up to the castle, as this gives a better sense of how the two face and complement each other, and of how the silhouette of the fortress accompanies the traveller throughout the visit.
Its heritage value has enjoyed official recognition for almost a century. By decree of 3 June 1931 it was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument belonging to the National Artistic Treasure, a distinction that even then placed it among the most outstanding monuments in the country. That protection remains in force today, as the castle is classed as a Site of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural), the highest level of heritage protection in Spain.
For visitors, all this makes for a stop that fits neatly into any route through the lands of Cuenca and La Mancha. Belmonte offers the chance to combine the charm of a historic town with a fortress that has been protected for decades, and to take in, from its hilltop, the relationship between the castle, the town and the surrounding countryside.
