Yeste Castle
Description
The first surprise about Yeste Castle is that you don't have to go looking for it on top of some remote hill: it rises right within the village itself, so wandering through the streets largely means circling its walls and discovering it from different angles. It is one of those buildings that remain part of everyday life in the place.
Its history can be read in two layers. The oldest is Andalusi: the Muslims built it and used it as a frontier fortress, linked to the old Nasrid Kingdom of Granada, at a time when these lands were a territory of watchfulness and defence. With the arrival of the Christians, the building changed in character and was gradually transformed into a palatial residence, and it is from those alterations that the Gothic features which now sit alongside its Islamic origins derive.
That blend is precisely what makes it so interesting for visitors: a single complex that went from military stronghold to stately home, and which preserves the mark of both uses. It is well worth taking your time over it and trying to tell apart what answers the need for defence from what reflects the wish to live in a degree of comfort.
The surroundings explain why this site was chosen. Yeste lies at the point where the Sierra de Alcaraz, the Sierra de Segura and La Sagra meet, a mountainous crossroads that is also the birthplace of the Segura, Tus, Taibilla and Zumeta rivers. A visit to the castle is therefore an excellent excuse to take in one of the most distinctive mountain landscapes in the province of Albacete and to understand how geography shaped the destiny of this fortress.
