Argüeso Castle
Description
Some castles make you go looking for them; others come out to meet the traveller. Argüeso belongs to the latter: its medieval silhouette crowns a hillock and is easy to make out from the road coming in from Paracuelles, so the visit begins long before you set foot within its walls, at that moment when the fortress appears outlined against the landscape of southern Cantabria.
Although everyone knows it by the name of the village, its original name is San Vicente Castle, a detail worth remembering as it also appears this way in many references. It stands within the municipality of Hermandad de Campoo de Suso, a land of high valleys where the choice of an elevated site was no accident: commanding the terrain and being seen was part of the very purpose of any fortification in the Middle Ages.
Its heritage value was officially recognised in 1983, when it was declared a site of cultural interest. This protection places it among the most notable medieval landmarks in the area and explains why it remains an essential stop for anyone exploring Campoo with an interest in history.
The best way to enjoy it is unhurriedly: approach along the Paracuelles road to watch the fortress grow as you draw nearer, then climb the hillock to understand, from the top, why someone decided to raise its walls here. It is a brief stop on the map, but one of those that leave an image that is hard to forget.
