Fornalutx

History and heritage

Fornalutx, also known as Fornaluig (officially Fornalutx in Catalan), is a Spanish municipality and village in the western part of Majorca, in the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands. On the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, the municipality borders those of Sóller and Escorca.

The beauty of its scenery has earned the village membership of the Most Beautiful Villages in Spain association.

The village's history has always been bound up with that of neighbouring Sóller, as the two formed a single municipality until 1812 the first time and 1820 the second. The third and definitive separation came in 1837, when its constitutional rights as an independent municipality were recognised. The first mayor of Fornalutx was Antonio Mayol Arbona (Xoroi), of the Mayol de Bàlitx lineage, proclaimed on 1 November 1812 and succeeded by Lluc Bisbal the following year.

In 1983 it was awarded the “Silver Plaque from the Majorca Tourism Board for the Defence and Upkeep of the Town", and that same year it received the “2nd National Prize for Embellished and Well-Kept Villages of Spain" from the Secretariat-General for Tourism; in 1995 it was given the “Premi Alzina” (Alzina Prize) for its work on behalf of nature, an award granted each year by the Balearic Group for Ornithology and the Defence of Nature (GOB).
