Garrastatxu Hermitage
Description
In the village of Barambio, within the municipality of Amurrio, stands the hermitage of Garrastatxu, also known as the Hermitage-Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mercy of Garrastatxu. It is one of those modest churches that give purpose to an outing through northern Álava: a place with no great monumental pretensions, but with the serenity typical of rural sanctuaries.
Its origins go back to 1626, in the heart of the 17th century, making it a testament to almost four centuries of devotion in this part of the Basque Country. The fact that it has survived to the present day says a great deal about local people's attachment to their sanctuary, dedicated to Our Lady of Mercy, a devotion closely bound up with popular religious tradition.
The double name by which it is known, both hermitage and sanctuary, already hints at what visitors will find: a small-scale Catholic building that has nonetheless served for generations as a spiritual landmark for the people of Barambio and the surrounding area.
A visit to Garrastatxu fits nicely into a relaxed day exploring the villages of Amurrio, combining an interest in religious heritage with the pleasure of wandering unhurriedly through the small settlements of Álava. It is worth coming with an eye for detail, because it is in these discreet corners that the everyday history of a region is best appreciated.
